Harald
Hardraada in Valhalla.
A letter delivered to him, 26th September 1066
Harold Hardraada, you do not know me your majesty,
I’m chosen housecarl to king Harold Godwinson,
Rightful sovereign to this land – unquestionably!
I’m named Halthreof. Yesterday your plan came undone
at Stamford Bridge. Many died on the battlefield!
I saw you, your shield wall, you fought well, would not yield,
died a warrior’s death, “Widow Maker” in your hand --
Your destiny. You shouldn’t have invaded our land!
The reason I write – I cannot understand you?
Already possessing a kingdom, a man who
Is greatly loved and respected by his people.
And as for material wealth – Constantinople,
when you were head of the Byzantium guard
a while back, gold and silver, you acquired a hoard!
You became rich beyond your wildest dreams,
As it’s proved of late, it wasn’t enough it seems.
Your obsession with one of the seven deadly sins -- greed,
You brought your army, invaded us, but couldn’t succeed,.
Damned by God, he had you removed from this Earth!
An arrow struck you in the throat, causing your death,
I’ve rewarded the archer -- my huntsman, Ultreth
May God purify your soul
Halthreof
