Somme Survivor
I knew of a
man once, an old timer.
He was a
gentleman, full of wisdom!
Lucky fellow
too – a Somme survivor!
That period;
had thought his time had come!
When, “Going
over the top,” men dropped like flies
The air was
filled with screams of the wounded.
The nightmares
still haunt him about it
The injured,
after years, he could hear their cries.
The days and
nights were mainly filled with dread.
He said it
amazed him he wasn’t hit!
One time there
was a heavy bombardment,
The old timer
told me, and his best friend
Lost both his
legs. He cried, ”It’s Heaven sent,
At least I’ll
be going home and not spend
Much more of
my time in this living hell!”
“It wasn’t all
doom and gloom though, “ said the old man,
Funny
incidents at times, laughs along the way,
It got their
minds off the turmoil for a spell.
He’s often on
my mind, although he’s gone.
Though I’m
sure we’ll meet again some day!
